What makes a food truck sustainable?
In this challenge, students look beyond taste and presentation to ask:
- Which foods are healthy and planet-friendly?
- How do ingredients affect the environment?
- What role do packaging, energy use, and waste play?
To make these ideas tangible, foods are ranked using a simple colour system:
Red = high footprint (like beef burgers)
Yellow = moderate footprint (like rice or chicken)
Green = low footprint (like chickpeas or pasta)
This visual approach helps learners see the impact of their food choices and make more sustainable menu decisions.
Learning through teamwork and creativity
The Sustainable Food Truck Challenge runs across 3-4 lessons, ending with a showcase where groups present their food trucks to classmates, parents, or the wider school community. Along the way, students gain skills in:
Critical thinking – weighing food’s carbon and water impacts
Collaboration – working together towards a shared goal
Creativity – designing logos, posters, and presentations to promote their trucks
It’s a cross-curricular experience, linking science, geography, art, and social studies in one engaging project.
Driving ideas into action
From solar-powered smoothie trucks to zero-waste veggie vans, students discover that sustainability isn’t just theory – it’s something they can design, create, and share. The Sustainable Food Truck Challenge transforms big environmental ideas into real, practical solutions, showing young people that their choices matter. It’s proof that learning about sustainability can be hands-on, creative, and inspiring.
