Local and Seasonal Food

Throughout history, societies have primarily relied on foods naturally available in their surroundings, adapting their diets to the changing seasons. In today’s globalized world, however, the connection between the food we eat and where we live has become less direct, as diverse ingredients from across the globe are more accessible than ever. While this shift has provided greater variety and convenience, it also raises important questions about sustainability, nutrition, and local economies.

Rather than viewing local and global food systems as opposing choices, this lesson explores how they can complement each other. Eating locally and seasonally offers many benefits, such as supporting local farmers, reducing the environmental impact of food transportation, and enjoying fresher, more nutrient-dense foods. At the same time, global food trade plays a vital role in ensuring food security, providing dietary diversity.
